Biography - Mark Vaughan OBE, D UNIV (OPEN), Director, Educational Change Consultancy
Mark Vaughan was the founder in 1982 of the Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education (CSIE), an independent organization promoting inclusion of all pupils in regular schools as an issue of human rights and social justice.
Before this, he had a 16-year career as a local and national journalist, followed by four years at the Advisory Centre for Education in London (1978-82) as a writer and campaigner. At ACE he recognized the need for a UK body to focus on the then emerging issue of integration of disabled children and established CSIE in 1982 as a national centre to promote inclusive education and the restructuring of regular school systems.
In collaboration with CSIE staff and the charity’s trustees over the next 25 years, he has commissioned, written and edited numerous reports, studies and articles, designed and spoken at numerous conferences, workshops and training days on inclusion issues, working widely across the UK and in many other countries around the world. At CSIE he initiated and led the team that researched, trialled and produced the Index for Inclusion (Booth & Ainscow, 2000, 2002 & 2006), now in 40 translations/adaptations around the world; the British Government placed the Index in every state school and education authority in England and Wales in 2000. During his 25 years leadership at the Centre, CSIE issued 50 publications and ran 25 national conferences on inclusive education.
In June 2007 he left CSIE and launched a new company, Educational Change Consultancy, where he now works internationally as an independent consultant and trainer in education change, inclusion and related fields, collaborating with Associates from time to time. Mark’s books include Inclusive Education: Readings And Reflections (2004, co-editor), and Summerhill and A S Neill (2006, editor), both for Open University Press/McGraw-Hill. As deputy news editor of the Times Educational Supplement, he was the last journalist to interview A S Neill in 1972. He is now Secretary of the A S Neill Summerhill Trust charity helping to raise funds for bursaries for poorer children to attend the world-renowned free school, and helping to promote the works of Neill and the practice of the school. Mark is also a trustee for Approach, the global anti-smacking campaign, which runs the Children Are Unbeatable campaign!
For Mark’s work with inclusion, Tony Blair, then Prime Minister, awarded him the OBE in 2005, and in 2007 the Open University awarded Mark an Honorary Doctorate for his work in education.
In his spare moments, Mark pursues his twin passions of tennis and sailing, and completed a life-long dream of sailing the Atlantic Ocean in 2005 in a sponsored challenge raising funds for CSIE by crewing on a 21-sail (inclusive) tall ship from the Canaries to the West Indies. In regular workshops, he continues to teach Tibetan Overtone Chanting, raising funds for the Free Tibet Campaign. He is married with two children and two grandchildren.
